Another Love Poem

My neighbors have tied
synthetic yellow roses around
plaster lions,
white, crouching
over the sidewalk and I
stilled my feet at the sight.
But my neighbors have day lilies,
too, alive ones
orange, leaning
against the steps to their porch. I stopped
at the humanity. We are our choices:
the more dumbfounding, the more
human.

i'm certain
thank you
we are not robots
or pawns. Did you know

a place exists where mosquitoes
fly drowsily through
hand swept breezes?
Their coexistence is a creed.

Yellow roses mean friendship.
Cloth ones out live day lilies
when the season changes
we'll still have a neighbor.
